Sappy Friday part one

This story choked me right the hell up this morning when I first heard it on the radio.  Reading the whole thing at the site I link to did it to me again.

I know it’s not, like, solving the problems of the world or anything.  I just fucking love these young women, that’s all.  It made me happy to hear what they did.

UPDATE - Kai posted something glorious also.

This is why I love sports. To me, sports provide an artificially-constrained structure in which humanity is pushed and tested — and more frequently than many people might realize, humanity shines forth with a very pure beauty and nobility. That’s not in the least sappy to me, it’s not talky or phony or self-congratulatory; it’s humble, quiet, and real. Those ball players who carried their injured foe to their own defeat are my kind of peeps; the kind who don’t think twice about doing the right thing when it’s all on the line and who probably don’t have much to say about it afterwards.

Now, coming from a totally different angle: popping your knee after rounding first base on a homer trot? Come on, athlete, you know better than that. You got ahead of yourself and lost focus. You’re lucky it was a classy opponent, because on any other day, that might have cost your teammates the tournament. Now fix that ligament and get through rehab, and always carry in your heart the feeling of that moment when it all came together in one perfect swing and you watched the ball sail over center field and out of the park.

Thanks for linking the story, Joan. It’s a good one.

    Peace.

Here by way of Kai, and sometimes it’s small moments like these that make me understand humanity as a good thing. People always say instinct is evil and negative; but what would they say if they read this story? Love it.
